Happy Hearts and Matching Outfits #5: The Rainbow

By: Peggy Sue Wood | @pswediting

This year, I’ve been on the lookout for matching outfits that bring out the best (and most vibrant) colors from some of my favorite series. I really think that the attention to matching character outfits can be stunning and meaningful as it adds so much heart and harmony to the work. Here’s a rainbow of my top picks for the last year!

REDThe Perks of Being a Villainess, Chapter 35
As the fiery camaraderie of The Perks of Being a Villainess’s protagonist, Deborah Seymour, and her love interest come together early in the series, we get to see them intentionally match outfits in Chapter 35. The looks scream confidence and intensity. While many love interests can wear red, nothing quite beats the strong pop of crimson and pink these two adorn to symbolize the unstoppable determination of our leading lady!

ORANGENot Your Typical Reincarnation Story, Chapter 94

Matching outfits for siblings in comics often symbolize their bond. When orange comes into play, it usually means either a warm energy or mischief. This color is kind of hard to find in matching outfits and was probably the hardest set to find for this post this year! I really like Not Your Typical Reincarnation Story and actually used it in my Matching Outfits post last year, so sorry to pull from the series again, but with the villainous siblings dressed up all in orange is something I just couldn’t resist!

YELLOWThe Twins’ New Life, Chapter 140 (epilogue 2)
A lot of love interests can and do wear yellow at different times, but often opt for a pale, melancholy sort of yellow (like When the Villainess is in Love in Chapter 100). Personally, I much prefer the sunshine-filled matching looks of The Twins’ New Life epilogue, episode 2, which instantly made me smile. These golden ensembles include a ribbon and brightly colored hair, radiating happiness and optimism of what the main character’s father had hoped for them early in life. This starts to really come through here at the end of the story. It’s heartwarming and bright!

GREENThe Princess Wishes to Die Peacefully!, Chapter 20
The earth-toned looks from Chapter 20 in The Princess Wishes to Die Peacefully! gave our leading lady an outfit that matches with her reunion with her former friend from previous lives. The way she purposefully wears green to welcome him was a choice I felt really pulled the moment together and gave a breath of fresh air to the series which, up until that point, had seemed overwhelmingly focused on jumping between plot points.

It was a tie, for me, with the minty green color of the family’s outfits in The Black Leopard Family’s Snow Leopard Baby Chapter 19, also featured below!

BLUE/INDIGOAn Extra Stole the Male Leads, Chapter 32
There’s something serene and timeless about matching blue outfits. I couldn’t get enough of it in An Extra Stole the Male Leads’ matching capes. The coordination was something that, I believe, tried to evoke a calm strength to contrast against the volatile red color the main character’s, Selonia’s, ex-fiancé and his new love interest, Grace, wore to the event that they all are going to.

PURPLEUndercover Princess, Chapter 14
Purple is a color reserved typically for royalty in historical themed dramas because of the real-life history of the color. As such, it is a little more rare (though not too rare) to find it in full color comics like those already listed. However, to honor the color, I felt like Princess Charlotte and her fiancé in Chapter 14 of Undercover Princess really did it best as they paired purple tones with black and white. This was especially nice to see as, after this, readers really get to see their relationship start to take a stronger turn as believable and lasting romance partners.
