Anime Expo Lite (Anime Expo 2020) – Developing Anime & Manga in the West: Expanding Webcomic IP Into TV, Film, Podcasts, & More!

7:55 PM – 8:40 PM (PDT) | Channel 2 | Friday 3 July 2020

Panel Description: Leading digital comic book platform, Tapas Media, explores the steps of how indie webcomic creators can creatively and commercially build their story, characters, worlds and brand for future multimedia expansion. With tv, podcast, and live-action, and anime/animation partnerships in the works, join the publishing team, producers, and comic creators as they discuss how creators can grow your comic book IPs.

My Review (@madamekrow):  Personally, I was sorely disappointed by this panel. I was looking forward to hearing what useful information it had alluded to in its description. Instead, there were insightful questions being asked to people who were geeking out about other anime as well as their achievements in the industry. By the end of their rambling, they would give the kind of vague answers we’ve all heard before.  How did you build a following? “I don’t know, I just have fun!” How did you develop such an interesting art style? “I stayed on my path and now I have my art style, I guess?” They had so much enthusiasm for other anime, so much excitement for their dreams coming true, which is perfectly fine and even relatable! However, my frustration became unbearable when they would shrug off their answers at the end of it all leaving little tips for new creators trying to break into the industry.

Notes:

  • Anime made in the west is in high demand, especially after the Netflix started producing their own original animes like Castlevania and Devilman Crybaby.
  • Have a character with a trait (strength, weakness, etc.) that people could connect and empathize with
