The Magic of Magikarp

By: Peggy Sue Wood | @pswediting

Hello, Everyone!

SO… I created a panel on Magikarp! It’s probably the least professional and least academic panel I’ve ever made, but it’s definitely a passion project that I put a lot of time into. I was honestly surprised when it got accepted to two conventions so far—Anime Town Greenville (which I couldn’t present is at due to losing my voice on the last day) and Banzai Con 2025 in Columbia, SC. While I’ve shared it in the pinned post (“The Editor’s Presentation”) on our blog, I’m trying to be more consistent about sharing my presentations through individual posts.

I really hope you’ll check out the panel and show some love for Magikarp by playing the Magikarp Jump game! Honestly, this panel started as a shameless fan-plug for the game and my favorite little fish Pokémon, which has truly captured my trainer heart. It’s free to play, has no ads, and doesn’t aggressively push for in-app purchases. I’m promoting it because I genuinely enjoy the game and think others should give it a try. The more players it has, the longer it will likely survive through updates to phones and software.

With that said, thanks for reading! As mentioned in my other presentations, you can find a copy of my script in the notes section under each individual slide.

Panel Description: Magikarp may be considered one of the weakest Pokémon in battle, but this beloved fish has made a splash in the Pokémon universe. From its humble origins to its starring role in the mobile game Magikarp Jump, this panel will explore why Magikarp is an enduring part of the Pokémon franchise. Join us for a fun and light-hearted session where we’ll dive into Magikarp’s history/inspiration, overlapping folklore with pokélore, probably watch a heartfelt video from the Pokémon channel, and discuss how you can start playing and advancing in Magikarp Jump. A partially academic panel as well as a shameless fan-plug for a free mobile game for an under-appreciated little carp! Whether you’re a seasoned trainer or a casual fan, this panel is perfect for anyone who loves Magikarp’s unique charm, wants to learn a little about Japanese folklore, and wants to learn how to play this fun mobile game!

Optional Formats: 30 min. Presentation | 60 min. Presentation

Presented:

  • Banzai Con; Columbia, SC | March 2025
