As some of you may know, I’ve been on a (mostly quiet) journey to learn more about East Asian cultures and languages. I’m still building confidence when it comes to speaking, but I’d say I have a decent handle on reading and writing low-level Japanese and, lately, I’ve also been casually exploring Chinese and Korean.

So when Anime Hanabi—a fellow blogger I follow and who follows this blog as well—published a post on 23 June titled “The Easiest Asian Language!”, I knew immediately it would be about Korean and, sure enough, I was right!

In the post, Amanda (momomanamu) playfully explores why Korean is the easiest East Asian language to read, walking readers through the history and logic behind Hangul—the Korean writing system. It’s a fun, accessible, and genuinely compelling read, and I enjoyed the humor and warmth set in the tone of the writing.

Korean is widely promoted as one of the more approachable languages to learn (at least when it comes to reading), and in my own experience, that’s absolutely true. I only recently started studying it, and while the speaking side of things can be very tricky (seriously, those subtle sound shifts are doing a number on me and I’m starting to wonder if I have a speech impediment), the writing system itself is incredibly beginner-friendly. Hangul is clean, logical, and surprisingly fast to pick up, especially if you know Japanese grammar.

Since Korean shares some sentence structure with Japanese, I’m also hoping it’ll be a little easier for me to get the hang of compared to Chinese—which, beautiful as it is, has been tough for me.

Even if language learning isn’t your thing, I still recommend checking out the Anime Hanabi blog. Amanda often revisits classic anime—many of which I watched as a teen getting into the fandom—and her reflections have a nostalgic, easygoing vibe that makes her posts feel like you’re engaging with someone’s slice-of-life reality. Truly, Amanda’s posts are always thoughtfully written and full of a passion.

Also, the blog has an impressively steady posting pace for a team of one (sometimes it feels like there’s a new post every day)!

  1. Yay! I’m so glad you liked my post on Asian languages! I’ve always had a passion for learning new languages, and I was truly shocked at how easy the writing system was for Korean. Especially after working through the tricky Japanese writing systems. Wow, you’re even trying to learn Mandarin? I took one look at the writing and tonal pronunciations in Mandarin and dubbed it too mighty of a language for my feeble skills to attempt! Kudos to you! And thank you for the shout out!
