There’s something about October that makes me crave the comforts of childhood. In years past, I was so in want of comfort that I often skipped the fall altogether to start preparing for Christmas—so no pumpkins, candy, or anything else fall-inspired aside from the fashion.
Now, I feel a little bold saying this online, especially since my friends feel it is a kind of blasphemy given how much people love Halloween, but in my family, it’s always been all about Christmas. My mom would put up a few Halloween decorations in the entryway and living room when I was growing up, but that was about it. We had to start decorating for Christmas by mid-October just to get everything up in time. At this point, there are a little over a hundred tubs of holiday decorations passed down from three generations—my mom’s, my grandma’s, and grandma’s parents—and now that I’ve started adding to the collection, it’s getting a little out of hand. What can I say? We’re those Christmas-all-year people, the ones still finding leftovers from last year as we start decorating for this year’s holiday season.
Despite me skipping Halloween for the last few years, there is one thing I haven’t been skipping, and that’s the #Scoobtober marathon on YouTube. Every year, an official YouTube channel from Warner Bros/Hanna-Barbera curates a month-long celebration of Scooby and the gang. Most of the time it is a mix of episodes and movies to enjoy that span decades of the series. If you grew up watching a certain gang of meddling kids and their talking Great Dane, there’s no better way to indulge that Halloween nostalgia, in my opinion, than diving into Scoobtober!
If you have access to Boomerang, Scoobtober is a pretty full-on October event and has been for several years. However, if you are like me, and don’t have streaming access to it, but still want the marathon, then look no further than YouTube (linked above). While it is more limited in content this year than years prior (repeating the same handful of episodes continuously for a week now), I’ve found a lot of enjoyment streaming the show in the background at work. As someone who is not a fan of the super scary, I think that this is the perfect level of “spook and mystery” for me, and it’s a genuine comfort to revisit the things that I used to love so much as a child.
So, if you want some nostalgia, and you like Scooby-Doo, then I encourage you to check it out!
